Description

mPEG-DSPE is a product with a methoxy group at one end of the PEG chain and a DSPE phospholipid at the opposite end of the PEG chain.

Fit and Function:

  • Composition:
    • mPEG-DSPE combines methoxy polyethylene glycol with 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DSPE).  
    • This creates an amphiphilic molecule, meaning it has both hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-fearing) parts.  
  • Function:
    • The DSPE portion, being hydrophobic, allows the molecule to integrate into lipid bilayers, like those of liposomes or lipid nanoparticles (LNPs).  
    • The mPEG portion, being hydrophilic, forms a protective layer around these structures.
    • This protective layer gives the “stealth” properties to the liposome. This stealth property, helps the drug delivery vehicle to avoid being taken up by the bodies reticuloendothelial system, therefore increasing the circulation time of the drug delivery vehicle.  

Applications:

  • Drug Delivery:
    • mPEG-DSPE is widely used in the formation of liposomes and lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for targeted drug delivery.  
    • Used to enhances the stability and circulation time of these drug carriers in the bloodstream, improving drug efficacy which may mean lower dosing.  
    • It is used to increase drug solubility.  
  • Nanotechnology:
    • mPEG-DSPE is used in surface modification of nanoparticles, improving their biocompatibility and preventing aggregation.  
    • This product is also used in bioimaging.
